“Dude, next song has to be “let her go” !! “, I insisted Pallavi. “Hell no !! Numb will be next .You listen to that song the whole frigging time”. Finally, Numb it was. And our day began like that, just like it does every morning.
Have you ever paid heed to the thought of why you listen to similar kind of music and feel satiated?? Furthermore, did you know that our preference of music defines our perspective of life and how we take it !!! For a very long time I couldn’t understand the sagacity behind this until one day when I decided to find out. I googled and checked into probably all possible sources that could help me find my answer. Fortunately I did.
Before going any further, I want you to answer a few questions:
- First of all, do you switch to a different song after only 10 seconds of playing and put your pen down that YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO LIKE IT?
- Do you feel like, “Okay let’s give this song a chance. I’ll hear out and then decide.”?
- Do you listen to a song just because you are madly in love with the lyrics?
- And finally, do you have a thousand songs in your playlist, which by the way you like and still listen to just 3 or 4 on a regular basis?
Now which one are you?? ALL or NONE!! Not able to decide!! Well let me just help …
Human brain, or for that matter any brain (animals don’t have the discretion to LIKE, yet) have innumerous sensory cells. They are called neurons, which react to a specific kind of stimuli. Now, while the configuration ( ..duh !! I am an engineer) is the same, the reaction to stimuli varies a great deal from person to person.
Often people who are inactive socially, (INTROVERTS out there, don’t get offended) don’t open up about their pains and agonies very easily. They are the ones who go for the lyrics of the song because they seek panacea to their pain in the lyrics. Consequently, even if the music is not so great, they go for the cognitive value aka emotions. They are the EMPATHIZERS (New word eh matey!!)
Second kinds are those who don’t read between the lines, be it while listening to the songs or even in their normal day to day life. They live a straight life (well almost!), don’t think too much while and after doing something and go for the fun-in-the-moment part. They are the ones who would know after 5 seconds of a song playing, whether they would like to spend the next 5 minutes listening to the song or not. These are called SYSTEMIZERS.
Third and most interestingly twisted ones are those who strangle between their taste of music and their love for lyrics. Most of these are those who have had some kind of troubled childhood or adolescence. As a result, they cannot figure out whether they should go with the impulse or standby and fly with the flow. They don’t experiment. They have a comfort zone. A couple of songs to which only they hear until some song drops at the back of their ear and they find it worth a shot. I call them TWISTERS. (Pretty interesting huhh …!!!)
